During my last visit to Pakistan, I bought The World Models P47 ThunderBird ARF kit. Following are the specs for this kit

Wing Span : 70 in / 1780 mm
Wing Area : 893 sq in / 57.6 sq dm
Flying Weight : 10.7 lbs / 4850 g
Engine Required : 4-stroke 1.20 engine

This kit comes with Scale flaps & electric retractable gears. The good news is that Doc. has agreed to assemble it for me.
The wing-loading of warbirds is usually on the higher side and as per the specs of this plane the wingloading comes out to be slightly more than 27. Knowing Doc. he must be already thinking of how to keep the wing loading at low without any major surgery.

So the first question is power plant for this baby and I am thinking of following
- Saito FA125 total weight 700g including silencer (Spins APC 16X6 at 9kRPMs)
- Saito 180 total weight 900g including silencer (Spins APC 17x8 18x8 at 9k RPMs)
- DLE20 gasoline engine 820g including muffler and ignition - spins APC 16x8 at 7+krpms)
- MLD28 gasoline engine 1043g including muffler and ignition - spins APC 15x8 at 7+k rpms)
- DL30 gasoline engine (1100g including muffler and ignition - Spins 18x10 at 8+krpms)

I am tilting towards Saito FA125 or DLE20 Engine. Whats do you guys think?

As for other means of reducing the weight, though the manual suggests regular servos, may be we can go for Digital Mini servos such as hitec HS5245 all around except retracts. This plane takes 6 regular servos on control surfaces and if we save 20 grams on each servo it means a total weight save of 120grams. For the retracts we will have to use the flat retract servos.

The vid showed it with evolution 26GX gasoline engine. Engine only (minus the muffler) weight is 936gms!

Your choice of power plant is too....conservative IMO

I would suggest Saito 180 @ 900gm it would be 29 cc of omph

as far as servos are concerned ...yes i agree

At least you agree that Saito would fit the bill. That natural seductive sound.

I agree that we'll shed off 200gm straight from the.....nose. In my humble experience, such planes generally come out tail heavy. I think we'll have to really move all the radio gear up front. What if we still have to add dead weight in the nose....it would be a shame.

Remember when we install ele servos close to the fuel tank, we have to have carbon/spruce push rods all the way to the control surface. The penalty with this setup is; added weight and slop!
Rud can be done with pull-pull setup....light and slop free. BTW the fuse already has installed 3 plastic sleeves, from radio compartment to the tail, to house/route long metal 2mm music wire. Personally i don't like this setup either

Its the blasted lead ballast in the nose i am worried about. Remember my WM cub...it was meant for 120 FS, instead i put up an OS 90 TS. With the batteries at almost inaccessible location (under the fuel tank) behind the Fire wall, ele, rud & throttle servo just behind the fuel tank at about F3. I still had to add 100gm of lead to the engine mount!!

open to suggestions

doc
